Another place where you can find a long listing of free directories is Directory Critic. Most of the directories listed on this site are good quality directories that will provide you with valuable backlinks. I have listed all of these websites in the sources section. EDIT: The guy below me actually provides a much better answer than I do. He is correct in his assertion that directories aren't really the best way to go. He's also correct that a lot of directories are little more than spam houses. However, I still think that, if you are looking for directories, the ones listed on Directory Critic tend to be the best. (DMOZ is the best of all, as he said). Also, I still recommend SEO Chat as a way of learning more about the other ways of optimizing your site.

Do it for free at http://www.submitexpress.com No one can guarantee that they can get you to the top of a search engine. Don't pay for that. Put good content on your pages that people want and the search engines will index you.

Search Engine submittals. There are many services that will charge you an arm and a leg for Submittals. There are many programs that you can purchase that will broadcast your site to the world. However, unless you want to spend nearly $1000 per year, to maintain your spot, you will need to find alternatives: http://www.DMOZ.ORG offers a free submittal that will get you included in most search engines. You will have to search for a category, submit your site and wait for them to approve you. Approval is not guaranteed. Google uses the DMOZ. http://search.yahoo.com/info/submit.html - Yahoo will also accept your site for free, but if you are in a hurry, they will ask you to pony up the bucks. When I look at where our site's traffic comes from (our top 3 links are from google, yahoo and msn (or their affiliates). Kinshuk has it exactly right. The more inter-related your pages are the more likely you are to catch the attention of search engines. Meta tags used to work for this, but they got abused. Now it is more important to have lot's of clear desciptive text on each page, and, very importantly, that the titles of your pages be very reflective of their content and not too generic. When you pay someone to optimize your site, these are the things they do. Of course, paying google can work wonders.
